Stages
1Getting Your CDL
- Must be 21 years old
- No CDL: we connect you with partner trucking schools
- Once you obtain your CDL, you advance to the next stage: training program.
2Driver Training Program
- Complete the R1 training program to gain practical driving experience.
- After training, you officially become a driver.
3Driving Career Options
- Choose your specialization: Flatbed, Stepdeck, Conestoga, RGN, Reefer (including Hazmat), Car hauling, (Future: Dry Van)
- Recommended: 2 years of experience before progressing, though not required.
4Lease Program
- Lease a truck and trailer through Penske.
- Learn to manage your experience and understand the business side of trucking.
- Recommended minimum: 6 months in this role, though it may vary by individual.
5Becoming an Owner-Operator
- Purchase your truck outright or lease-to-own through R1, while continuing to rent trailers from R1.
- Choose to buy independently, rent from another provider, or purchase through R1 with financing options available.
- Qualification: Truck value must exceed the remaining balance.
6Expanding Your Fleet
- Gain experience as a truck owner.
- Purchase a second truck, then gradually increase your fleet up to 5 trucks.
- Recommended pace: 1 truck every six months.
7Establish Your Own Trucking Company
- Open a US DOT Authority and create your own business.
- Requirements for support: Strong financial foundation. Most trucks and trailers paid off. Adequate savings
- Transition plan available: R1 assists with refinancing any equipment financed by us to be in your name.
8Long-Term Partnership with R1
- R1 Trailers Dealership (buy or rent trailers) • Cargo equipment, parts, and repair services • Dispatch services (stepdeck, flatbed, Conestoga, RGN) • R1 Permits (oversize) • R1 GO Truck Navigation • R1 ELD free app • TMS • Dash cams • GPS tracking for trucks and trailers
